History of Frank Fetch Memorial Park
The .2 acres of land originally contained 4 small saltbox houses. By 1966, only a little ice house remained on an otherwise vacant lot. A real estate developer proposed to build cheap apartments on the land. Instead, the City of Columbus acquired the land and named it Beck Street Park. The City’s first park installations were the antique gas light fixtures that are still there today – although the gas lights have been replaced by electric LED lights. The wrought iron fences were salvaged from buildings torn down near the old Central Market.
The German Village Society joined with the City to make improvements to the Park and renamed it the “Frank Fetch Memorial Park” in honor of, Frank Fetch, the former Superintendent of Parks for Columbus and “Founder of German Village”.
GERMAN VILLAGE GARTEN CLUB
2023
In 1996, the German Village Garten Club was asked to develop and maintain the Park with the cooperation of the City Department of Recreation and Parks.
2015
Today’s design is similar to the social gardens of Munich. The Garten Club created a master plan in 1996 for enriching the beauty and usefulness of the Park, sought donations, and commenced a significant revitalization of this space. The antique light fixtures, brick walkways, hanging baskets, and wrought iron fences give the Park an old -world feeling. Park benches, picnic tables, a pergola, exotic tropical plants, lush perennials, bright annuals, and a fountain provide an inviting space for neighbors, walkers, artists, photographers, and workers on their lunch breaks as well as a beautiful setting for weddings.
The German Village Garten Club members and volunteers have been digging, planting, trimming, mulching, and weeding since 1966, increasing the quality and scope of German Village beautification efforts each year. New trees, shrubs, containers, perennials, and annuals are added each year through the financial contributions of the Garten Club through fundraising activities such as Garten Markt. The volunteer work plus substantial financial contributions make Frank Fetch Park a breath-taking jewel of a garden.
Since 2002, the Garten Club has hosted the well-attended Third Sunday Concert Series in Frank Fetch Park that presents 4 monthly concerts each June through September. For the past few years, the concert series has been sponsored by #UrbanRanch and the concerts have expanded into a 90-minute presentation. In addition, the park is also the site of the annual holiday tree lighting when volunteers turn the park into a winter wonderland of twinkling lights. Multiple other events are held there including a fall festival.
The German Village Market Club raised money to acquire, install and plant flowers in the planters along Third Street. They maintain the planters and change the display seasonally. The picture to the left shows the installation in 2014. The picture to the right is the beautiful impact of the flower boxes.
