Behind the traditional wrought iron fence, lined with arborvitae trees, is an open-air extension of a home that is more than 136 years old.

The garden-only tour of the Anthony Meyer and Tyler Mason’s home at 742 S. 5th St. is a peek into the past and a well-executed vision for an urban oasis that features a collection of historic bricks, a swimming pool and more than 60 trees.
The Italianate vernacular home was built around 1886 and first owned by Michael Franck. Michael was a tailor who purchased this land in 1883 for $500. Notable features of the home include the original slate roof; weighted, wood-frame windows; limestone lintels carved with antlers atop the windows; wooden antler details that frame an inviting front porch. While the meaning of the antler carvings is not clear, the detail is meaningful to Anthony and Tyler — who are called “Antler” by their friends.
Renovations began on the property in 2020. Large steps now lead guests to a newly installed pool (the original pool was installed in 1984) lined with the same limestone that is ever-present throughout German Village. The 10-feet-deep saltwater pool will be heated for use in all summer weather, and a small space that sits near the front of their property will be used for dining, entertaining and fires. Thirty-plus columnar birch trees shade the area and offer privacy.
The patio and sidewalks are paved with thousands of pounds of salt-glazed Nelsonville “star” bricks, which were manufactured from about the late 1800s through 1920 — and were more recently salvaged from throughout the state by the pair.
Some fun facts: this brick style won first place at the World’s Fair in St. Louis and can still be found in use as far away as Paris, and this address is now host to one of the largest collections of “star” bricks manufactured in Nelsonville — a southeast-Ohio city that may ring a bell as the hometown of actress Sarah Jessica Parker of “Sex and the City.”

Ironically, a notable resident of 742 S. 5th St. was Mikhail Baryshnikov, who also appeared in 2003 on “Sex and the City” as Aleksandr Petrovsky, a famous artist who becomes Carrie Bradshaw’s lover in the final season. Who else can say that their home has that many connections to “Sex and the City”?
The frame structure at the back of the property was originally used to cure meat. Today, it is a pool house with a full bathroom, updated HVAC system, Marvin doors and a small living space for guests to use without having to go into Tyler and Anthony’s home — adding to the feeling of a resort in their own backyard.

The house that Anthony and Tyler visited years ago on the 2012 Haus und Garten Tour is now theirs to enjoy on summer days with family, friends and neighbors, relaxing poolside — with many stories to tell of the beautiful property that is already a meaningful part of their lives.
