We like being able to walk most places and there is an abundance of easily accessible activities in and around German Village and downtown Columbus.
Lots of amenities/proximity to family friendly activities such as: Schiller Park/Rec Center, Audubon Center, Bicentennial Park/Fountains, COSI, Columbus Commons etc. Access to kid friendly restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Easy to get out of the city for recreational activities such as Metro Parks for hiking, fishing, etc. More diverse community than suburban life What are Ethan's favorite subjects in school? Does he have friends from around Columbus or the Bexley area? Ethan’s favorite subject at school is math but he likes science/nature, too. Ethan has friends from his old daycare, school friends, and through sports. He is also friends with kids through relationships that Sam and I have made with their respective parents. His friends are all around the city – downtown, and other suburbs. |
Sam, Mike & Ethan
Tell me about where you are from in England. How often do you go back? Sam is from Canterbury, I’m from a small village 30 miles west of Cambridge. We try and go back to England as a family once every couple of years, but we do go back individually in between times. In fact, Ethan went back to England on his own 2 years ago (aged 8). We put him on a plane in Detroit and Sam’s sister picked him up from London. Sam flew over a week later and they traveled together for the return journey back to Columbus. We were planning to do the same, this year, but COVID-19 looks like preventing that from happening. Ethan and I flew to England last year to watch Liverpool FC at Anfield. Why did you choose German Village when you first moved here? We wanted to stay downtown, and we just loved the vibe of the village. The history of the area reminded us of home. It is also convenient for Sam’s work at Children’s. Why did you choose to raise your family in German Village? We moved here before we had a family and made an active decision to not relocate to the suburbs. We love German Village and wanted to remain when Ethan reached school age. We wanted Ethan to have a Montessori education and were fortunate to find a Montessori school nearby. What do you do for your jobs? Who do you work for? I think you both have phd's. What subject matter are they in?
Sam is an Associate Professor at Nationwide Children’s Hospital/Ohio State University and works in scientific research. I work as a project manager for a healthcare communications agency (in the pharmaceutical industry). We both have PhDs in microbiology/microbial genetics. |
Spotty the cat, aged 4 (perhaps)
Spotty is a cross between a tabby and calico – a tabico or caliby. She was a stray and hung out on our block in late summer, 2016. As the Fall drew nearer, we were concerned for her welfare and ultimately took her in as one of the family. Spotty is kind of unique in that she has an extra toe on each of her front paws…also known as “mitten” paws. |
Mike is also an excellent photographer.
My passion for photography started about 15 years ago. I did a darkroom class in Philadelphia, where we were living at the time, and it grew from there. At that time it was all film photography with countless hours spent in the dark room working on prints. I did have a darkroom in the basement of our German Village house for a while but after we had Ethan, there just wasn't a lot of time available anymore. Plus, digital photography was becoming the standard at that time, too!
Photography is a hobby for me. A release from the hustle and bustle of life. I am the family documentarian. We like to do a lot of activities in and around Columbus and try and travel a bit further a few times a year and I always have my camera with me on those trips. Occasionally, I will post something I am proud of on Instagram :-). If anybody sees anything they like, they can always reach out to me and we can work on getting it printed for them.
