From Susan:
We moved here from Orange County, CA where outdoor living is part of every day life year round. I wanted to re-create the feel here and have spaces that we could use outside most of the year—even during rain and snow. I’ve mixed glam, midcentury modern, and original Victorian architectural styles on the inside and extended that vibe to the outside.

Our home was built around 1908 and is one of the “newer” houses on the street. A stately American Foursquare. We have the original blueprints. The first floor is pretty much the same as it was. The third floor was a billiards parlor.
We redecorated almost everything—except the original architecture—on the inside in 2018-2019. The home has quarter sawn oak floors, extensive millwork, stained glass, fireplace surrounds, and mosaic tile floors that have been married with a modern color palette, pop art, striking light fixtures, and sleek furnishings. Every room is glamorous, comfortable, and unexpected….and that look and feel is extended to the outdoor living spaces.
Our home was on the 2019 GV Haus & Garten Tour.

While stuck at home during the pandemic, I updated and renovated all the outdoor spaces—doing a lot of the work myself.
We have a tiny yard, so I had to be very thoughtful about how to maximize every space.

The backyard is our entertaining area that became a necessity during the pandemic to see friends year round outdoors. The furniture around the large fire table is heated and incredibly cosy even on chilly winter nights. I installed outdoor surround speakers connected to the home Sonos, and sometimes we bring the TV outside to watch football games and movies. Last year, we added a professional outdoor pizza oven which has become a fun hobby learning to cook at 950 degrees.

I also added 26 feet of raised garden beds in the tiny narrow south-facing path behind the garage. I get lots of peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, and herbs all summer long. It was just wasted space before.
There are two rooftop decks (which were just roofing material) and added a flooring structure to turn them into new outdoor living spaces. The back rooftop deck now has lush artificial grass, layers of lighting, speakers connected to the home system, a lounge area with chaise chairs, and a sitting area.
I immediately fell in love with the front porch with the original tile floor and sweeping views of Schiller Park. We added 4 rocking chairs and it is the perfect spot to entertain and watch the activities in the park.

We were honored to have our home featured in the Wall Street Journal in November 2019.
I went to The Ohio State University for my master’s degree and lived in Columbus for many years before moving to California. I always wanted to live in German Village for its one-of-a-kind historic charm and amazing architecture. When we had the opportunity to move back to Columbus in 2018, we knew that was the place I wanted to be.
After living here for 4.5 years, it’s the people that make GV a special place. We are so thankful to have made so many wonderful friends and all the great memories.

The original owner, Joseph F Bott (1858-1940), was a well known business man in downtown Columbus during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Bavaria, Germany in 1858, his family moved to Zanesville, Ohio while he was a child. He is best known for starting Bott Brothers Billiards and Buffet in 1890 with his younger brother Billie Bott. Originally located near the State House, the business moved ca. 1890 to 161 North High Street (due to a fire in the first location) and closed in 1919 due to the implications of prohibition. The latter building still maintains much of the elaborate entrance and interior mosaic tile flooring, mahogany bar from the 1893 worlds fair and stunning ceilings. Originally, there was an electric sign containing over 1000 lights. The firm, Stribling and Lum designed the curved glass window front in 1903. Bott Brothers featured a saloon, 40 billiard tables and a candy & cigar counter. It is currently occupied by the Elevator Brewing Company on High Street near the Nationwide Plaza complex.

We love taking the dogs for walks in Schiller Park and to the St. Mary’s Farmers Market. When it’s time to eat, we love Chapman Eats, Pistacia Vera, and Fox in the Snow.
We have made many great friends in the Village, and enjoy hosting themed dinner parties and playing competitive Eucre games.
