We fell in love with this charming cottage the second we laid eyes on it. The beautiful wood floors and many exposed brick walls were just what we were looking for. Also, the backyard was the perfect size, with space for entertaining and gardening.
Front room.
We have always loved German Village and rented here many years ago. When it came time to buy a house, we felt we couldn’t afford to stay. We bid good-bye to the brick streets, the beautiful landscapes, and wonderful parks and headed north. Later, when we retired, we knew that German Village was the place we wanted to live.
Now, after many delightful years living here, we recently decided to opt for condo housing just north of downtown. Despite the move, we plan to remain very active in German Village.

Kitchen.
We knew when we bought the home that the kitchen would need to be replaced. It was dated. We had contractors rip everything out and start over. After agreeing to their plans, we headed out for an African photo safari. Fortunately, everything turned out even better than expected. We love our kitchen.
We also had our two bathrooms redone, again while we were on trips, and are very happy about how they turned out.

First bedroom.
Our home was built in 1872 on a fairly large lot. Later on, the owner of our house divided the lot. The new lot faces Lansing Street. A house was subsequently built on the lot for a family member. To make the process easier, instead of running a separate water system to the new house, they ran the line from the original house to the new house. To this day, we receive the water bill for both houses and divvy it up depending on how many people live in each place. Right now, two people live in each house, so each household pays half. We have never had a problem with this approach, but it does often make for an interesting closing.
Downstairs full bathroom.
Second bedroom.
There are so many interesting things to do in the neighborhood, including just walking around enjoying the architecture and landscaping. My husband is an avid gardener and a former president and board member of the German Village Garden Club. I am a former president and board member of Actors’ Theatre and always enjoyed being a part of the productions. In addition, there are so many groups and subgroups in the village, it is easy to become involved.
Upstairs living space.
Backyard seating, dining and garden.
If you live in GV you pretty much have to have a dog. We adopted our black cockapoo, Watson, not long after moving here. We got him when he was 18 months old and he is now 14 years old. He loves Schiller Park and Frank Fetch Park, as well as just walking around the neighborhood. He firmly believes that our house is deeded to him and we live here at his pleasure.
We are both retired and loving it. It is so easy to get involved and to make friends here, We always stay somewhat busy (but not too busy to enjoy a cocktail on our back patio in the spring and summer). We have also travelled quite extensively here and abroad and always enjoy that.
We will greatly miss our wonderful German Village home.
