GO: Cape Cod and Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard

In August, my friend, Beth, of Lewes, Delaware picked me up in Westport, Connecticut to drive us up to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. We visited our friend, Susan, who lives in East Falmouth. The following day we decided to ferry over to Martha's Vineyard to spend the day in Edgartown. The Steamship Authority is nearby in Woods Hole and the boat ride is only a 45 minute journey to Oak Bluffs.

Land ahoy! Oak Bluffs Seaport, Martha's Vineyard.

The drive to Edgartown from Oak Bluffs starts along scenic Seaview Avenue. You go past Ocean Park, followed by lovely colonial revival homes built along the waterfront, then Inkwell Beach and the Joseph Sylvia State Beach before crossing the Jaws Bridge (the bridge featured in the movie) otherwise known as the American Legion Memorial Bridge. A popular spot for people to jump off into the sea. At this point the road name changes into Beach Road. After that you go by the Sengekontacket Pond before reaching wonderful Edgartown!

The Seafood Shanty

The Seafood Shanty is located on the seaport with tasty seafood, drinks and delightful water views! It was my second time there. The double shrimp Bloody Marys are a meal in themselves and a must do.

Edgartown Village Historic District

After our lunch, we wandered over to the Edgartown Historic District, starting on Water Street. We were enamored by the gorgeous Greek Revival homes built by ship captains during the 19th century when Edgartown was one of the largest players in the whale oil industry.

The Ferry Ramp for Chappaquiddick Island

The middle youth with hat was the wheeler dealer of the three siblings.
He decided to give us a 50% price reduction after some negotiation.

After spending many vacations in different locations in Martha's Vineyard the Obama's chose Edgartown when they bought.
Their home is located inbetween two coves, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

We did not bump into the Obama's on the streets of Edgartown, at least not this time.

The College Light Opera Company at the Highland Theater

We spent an afternoon at the Highland Theater watching a College Light Opera show. Every summer college drama students are recruited from around the country to participate in this production where week after week they do a new play. They give up their summer to be intensely participating in the theatric dramas. It was impressive. I'm looking forward to the commentator of our show Ezra Wolfe Moore becoming a well known actor.

Susan's favorite holiday is Halloween and she loves witches. While we were enjoying our seafood feast and sea views a raven showed up to nod to Susan and share in our splendid evening.

Chatham

We decided to spend a day in Chatham. It is located on the elbow of Cape Cod. The East side headed towards Provincetown is along the Atlantic Ocean and other part of the angle lies to the North, Pleasant Bay and South, Nantucket Bay. The town is full of charming shops and places to eat.

Every summer the Chatham Chamber of Commerce & Merchants Association features
Art in the Park at the Kate Gould Park.
It is Cape Cod’s largest outdoor art show, which features beautifully designed whales and sharks created by local artists.

THE CHATHAM SQUIRE

We stopped in the iconic The Chatam Squire for a bite to eat. Known as the quintessential pub of Cape Cod. Founded in 1968, there are two distinct areas in the establishment. A family friendly dining room on one side and a lively, vintage license plate lined bar and billiards room in the other.

I had a tasty seasonal peach and burrata salad paired with a well made drink the Painkiller. Beth enjoyed a locally brewed beer, Devil's Purse.

Flying Bridge Restaurant

Cape Cod was named by Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, an English explorer in 1602, due to catching volumes and volumes of Cod in the sea along the cape.
"The fifteenth day we had again sight of land, which made ahead, being as we thought an island... we called it Shoal of Hope. Near this cape, we came to anchor in fifteen fathoms, which we took great store of Cod-fish, for which we altered the name, and called it Cape Cod." First Mate Gabriel Archer. May 15, 1602. Cape Cod is a very historic name for a region in the United States, Archer’s records are the earliest detailed English record from explorers along the New England coast.

The local cod is still fabulous. I love a restaurant on the water that has excellent food and the Flying Bridge is definitely one of them!!
